An autumn capsule wardrobe is a short list of clothes that all go together, so you can get dressed quickly as the weather changes. For women, 12 well-chosen pieces cover two weeks of different outfits: two coats, two knits, two dresses, a two-piece co-ord, a shirt, jeans and two pairs of boots. For men, 10 pieces built around shirts and overshirts give more than a dozen combinations.

The women's list comes with a day-by-day plan, the men's with starter outfits, and both with a five-step check of what you already own.

Key takeaways

  • Twelve pieces cover two weeks of women's outfits; ten pieces give men more than a dozen combinations.
  • Keep to two neutrals and one accent so every top works with every bottom.
  • Check what you already own first, then buy for the missing layer, not the trend.

Why 12 pieces?

There's no official number. John Lewis's autumn capsule wardrobe edit uses around 16 pieces and leans on a shirt, knitwear and a versatile midi dress. We've trimmed that to 12 by choosing pieces that pair in several ways, such as a co-ord whose top and trousers also work apart.

The aim isn't to own as little as possible. It's to make sure everything you own goes with everything else. As Eileen Fisher's guide to building a simple wardrobe suggests, start with what already works in your wardrobe and add layers around it. That matters in the UK in particular: the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee's Fixing fashion report (2019) found that the UK buys more clothes per person than any other country in Europe. The committee also heard that the most sustainable garment is the one you already own.

The women's autumn capsule: 12 pieces

# Piece Role
1 Double-breasted belted coat Cold mornings, smart days
2 Classic knee-length trench Mild, showery days
3 Textured button-front cardigan Layer over shirts and dresses
4 Shawl-collar half-button jumper in burgundy Your colour accent
5 Corduroy single-breasted midi dress Office or weekend in one piece
6 Plaid lapel shirt maxi dress Wear buttoned as a dress or open as a light coat
7 and 8 Turtleneck top and straight-leg trousers set Two pieces that also work apart
9 White or pale blue shirt Under the cardigan, jumper or dresses
10 Slim jeans Weekend default; tuck them into boots
11 Knee-high block-heel boots Dresses and tucked jeans
12 Platform Martin boots Trousers, jeans and casual days

Keep the palette to two neutrals, such as black and camel, and one accent, such as burgundy. Where a piece comes in several colours, choose from that range, with the white or pale blue shirt as your light base.

A two-week outfit plan

Each day uses only the 12 pieces above; pick whichever coat suits the weather.

Day Week 1 Week 2
Monday Co-ord set, Martin boots Corduroy dress over the shirt, collar out, Martin boots
Tuesday Shirt, burgundy jumper, jeans, Martin boots Turtleneck, jeans tucked into knee-high boots
Wednesday Corduroy dress, knee-high boots Shirt tucked into set trousers, Martin boots
Thursday Plaid shirt dress worn open over the co-ord, Martin boots Burgundy jumper over the corduroy dress, knee-high boots
Friday Plaid shirt dress, knee-high boots Co-ord set, cardigan, knee-high boots under the trousers
Saturday Burgundy jumper, jeans tucked into knee-high boots Plaid shirt dress worn open over turtleneck and jeans, Martin boots
Sunday Cardigan over the shirt, set trousers, Martin boots Shirt, burgundy jumper, set trousers, knee-high boots

If an outfit doesn't feel like you, swap one piece, not the whole look.

How to check what you already own

  1. Lay out last autumn's favourites. Only the things you actually wore.
  2. Match them to the list. Tick off every role that's already covered, even if the piece isn't identical.
  3. Look for the missing layer. Many wardrobes have plenty of tops but no mid layer such as a cardigan or overshirt.
  4. Buy for the gap, not the trend. Choose the piece that creates the most new outfits with what's left.
  5. Test it for two weeks. Follow the plan above. Anything you skip twice probably doesn't belong in your capsule. Rotate your knitwear too: Woolmark's wool care guide recommends resting wool garments for 24 hours between wears.

A capsule that changes with the season

An autumn capsule, or fall capsule wardrobe as it's known in the US, isn't fixed. When the temperature drops, swap the trench for a warmer coat and add a thicker knit. Keep the dresses, shirts and boots. Our guides to knee-high boot outfits and rainy day outfits show more ways to wear the same pieces. You'll find the outer layers in our outerwear collection and the rest of the season's pieces in the autumn collection.
